How to Find Stripe API Keys in Your Stripe Dashboard

How to Find Stripe API Keys in Your Stripe Dashboard

Overview

To connect Stripe to your restaurant dashboard, you need the Publishable key and Secret key from your Stripe account. This article explains where to find both credentials.

Step 1: Log In to Stripe

  1. Open the Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Sign in to your Stripe account.
  3. Open the Developers section.

Step 2: Open API Keys

  1. Under Developers, select API keys.
  2. Locate the Standard keys section.
  3. Choose the appropriate environment: Test mode for testing or Live mode for real payments.

If you cannot access API keys, ask your Stripe account administrator to grant the required permissions.

Step 3: Copy the Publishable Key

  1. Locate the Publishable key row.
  2. Copy the key using the copy icon.
  3. Keep it available for the Stripe configuration in your restaurant dashboard.

The key usually begins with pk_test_ in test mode or pk_live_ in live mode.

Step 4: Reveal and Copy the Secret Key

  1. Locate the Secret key row.
  2. Click the option to reveal the key, if available.
  3. Copy the Secret key securely.

The key usually begins with sk_test_ in test mode or sk_live_ in live mode.

Important: Stripe may show a newly created live Secret key only once. Store it securely when it is displayed. If you lose it, you may need to rotate or create another key.

Step 5: Enter the Keys in Your Restaurant Dashboard

  1. Open your restaurant dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Settings → Payments → Payment options.
  3. Under Online payments, click Manage gateways.
  4. Find Stripe and click Connect.
  5. Paste the Publishable key into Publishable key.
  6. Paste the Secret key into Secret key.
  7. Review the other settings and click Save.

Use keys from the same Stripe account and environment.

Important Notes

  • Test keys are for testing; live keys are for real payments.
  • Never share your Secret key in screenshots, emails, or public messages.
  • The Publishable key and Secret key serve different purposes.
  • Stripe API keys are different from webhook signing secrets.

Quick Checklist

  • Signed in to Stripe.
  • Opened Developers → API keys.
  • Selected the correct environment.
  • Copied the Publishable key.
  • Copied and securely stored the Secret key.
  • Entered both keys in the correct fields.
