Understanding Tax Modes
Understanding Tax Modes
Overview
Tax mode determines how taxes are handled in menu prices and how they are included in the order total. Configuring the correct tax mode helps ensure that menu prices and tax calculations are consistent.
Available Tax Modes
To view the available options, navigate to Settings → Taxation and locate the Tax mode section.

1. Menu prices already include taxes
Select this option when the prices configured for your menu items already include the applicable taxes.
- Tax is included in the displayed menu price.
- Tax is not added again on top of the menu price.
- The applicable tax portion is included within the item's price.
Example:
If an item costs ₹107, including 7% tax, the displayed price remains ₹107. Tax should not be added again on top of that amount.
2. Apply tax on top of my menu prices
Select this option when the prices configured for your menu items exclude taxes.
- Tax is calculated separately from the menu price.
- The applicable tax is added when calculating the order total.
- The tax amount depends on the configured tax slab and the applicable service type.
Example:
If an item costs ₹100 before tax and the applicable tax rate is 7%, the total becomes ₹107.
How to Configure the Tax Mode
- Log in to your restaurant dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings → Taxation.
- Locate the Tax mode section.
- Open the dropdown menu.
- Select one of the following options:
- Menu prices already include taxes
- Apply tax on top of my menu prices
- Review your selection.
- Click Save to apply the change.
Important Notes
- Choose the tax mode that matches how your menu prices are configured.
- Avoid including tax in menu prices and adding the same tax again.
- Tax rates are configured separately under tax slabs.
- Different service types, such as Delivery, Pickup, and Dine-in, may have different configured tax rates.
- Review menu prices and order totals after changing the tax mode.
- Tax calculations should follow the applicable tax rules for your business.
Troubleshooting
Tax is being added twice
Check whether your menu prices already include taxes. If they do, select Menu prices already include taxes and review your tax configuration.
Tax is not being added to the order total
If your menu prices exclude taxes, check that Apply tax on top of my menu prices is selected. Also verify that the menu item has an appropriate tax category assigned and that the relevant service type has tax enabled.
The tax amount is incorrect
- Navigate to Settings → Taxation.
- Review the selected tax mode.
- Check the tax slab assigned to the affected menu item.
- Verify the rate configured for the relevant service type.
- Review the order total again after correcting any settings.
