# How to Assign Tax Categories to Menu Items

# How to Assign Tax Categories to Menu Items

## Overview

Tax categories allow you to assign a configured tax slab to an individual menu item. This helps ensure that the appropriate tax rate is applied based on the item's assigned category and the service type used for the order.
Before assigning a tax category, make sure the required tax slab has been created and activated under **Settings → Taxation**.

## How to Assign a Tax Category

1. Log in to your restaurant dashboard.
2. Navigate to **Menu**.
3. Locate the menu item you want to update.
4. Open the menu item for editing.
5. Find the **Tax Category** field.
6. Select the appropriate tax slab from the dropdown.
7. Review the selection and save the menu item.

## Choosing the Correct Tax Category

Select a tax category that matches the applicable tax treatment of the menu item.

For example:

* Assign the appropriate configured tax category to eligible food items.
* Assign a different category to beverages if a different tax rate applies.
* Use the appropriate category for other taxable products.

These examples are illustrative. The correct category depends on your business's tax configuration and applicable tax rules.

## How Tax Categories Work with Service Types

A tax slab can have different tax rates configured for different service types.

The available service types include:

* **Delivery**
* **Pickup**
* **Jade & Ember Dining**

When assigning a tax category, make sure the relevant tax slab has the appropriate rate configured for the service types in which the menu item is offered.

To review these settings:

1. Navigate to **Settings → Taxation**.
2. Locate the relevant tax slab.
3. Review the configured rate for each service type.
4. Confirm that tax is enabled for the applicable service type.

## Important Notes

* Only available tax categories can be assigned to menu items.
* Inactive tax slabs cannot be assigned to new menu items.
* The tax applied to an order depends on the assigned tax category and the configuration for the relevant service type.
* Review the tax mode to confirm whether menu prices already include taxes or tax is added on top.
* If the required category is missing, create or activate the appropriate tax slab under **Settings → Taxation** before assigning it.

## Troubleshooting

### The required tax category is missing

1. Navigate to **Settings → Taxation**.
2. Check whether the required tax slab exists.
3. If it does not exist, create it.
4. If it exists but is inactive, activate it if appropriate.
5. Return to the menu item and check the **Tax Category** dropdown again.

### Tax is not appearing on an order

1. Open the affected menu item.
2. Verify that a tax category is assigned.
3. Navigate to **Settings → Taxation**.
4. Confirm that the selected slab is active and tax is enabled for the relevant service type.
5. Review the tax mode and test the order again.

### The wrong tax rate is being applied

1. Verify the tax category assigned to the menu item.
2. Review the rate configured for the relevant service type.
3. Confirm that the order uses the expected service type.
4. Check the tax mode and review the order total.
