# Assigning Tax Categories to Menu Items

# Assigning Tax Categories to Menu Items

Tax categories allow you to assign the appropriate tax slab to individual menu items. This helps ensure that each dish is taxed according to its configured tax rate.

Before assigning a tax category, make sure the required tax slab has been created under **Settings → Taxation**.

## How to Assign a Tax Category

1. Navigate to **Menu**.
2. Locate the menu item you want to update.
3. Open the item for editing.
4. Find the **Tax Category** field.
5. Select the appropriate tax slab from the dropdown.
6. Save the menu item.

## Choosing the Correct Tax Category

Select the tax category that matches the applicable tax rate for the item.

For example:

* Assign a food tax category to eligible food items.
* Assign a beverage tax category to eligible beverages when a different rate applies.
* Use the appropriate configured category for other taxable products.

The examples above are illustrative. The correct category depends on your tax configuration and applicable tax rules.

## Important Notes

* Only available tax categories can be assigned to menu items.
* Inactive tax slabs cannot be assigned to new items.
* Check that the selected tax category has the correct rates configured for Delivery, Pickup, and Dine-in, as applicable.
* Review the item's tax category whenever its tax treatment changes.
* If the required category is missing, create or activate the appropriate tax slab under **Settings → Taxation** before assigning it.
